Many people ask about our name: Science Hill – what does it mean?
Although the answer has been lost to history, our best understanding is that the original German-speaking immigrants along Beeson Street desired to name their new community “Zion’s Hill” (Zion in honor of Jerusalem.) However, the name that was heard and stuck was “Science Hill.” Starting in the 1800s, “Science Hill” became the designation for this geographical area, and served as the name of the local school district and our church. And we’ve been “Science Hill” ever since!
Rest assured, we have absolutely no connection with Scientology or Christian Science. For many years, we were affiliated with the United Church of Christ, but we became an independent, non-denominational Christian congregation in 2006. Please see our statement of faith for a full description of our beliefs.
